Parish Path Adopters

Parish Path Adopters
Parish Path Adopters is a scheme from Essex Area Ramblers that Maldon and Dengie have promoted and enhanced, working with our Essex Highways Footpath Officer (EHFO), where individuals or groups can help keep our footpaths open and safe.

We currently need new Adopters.  So, what does a PPA do?
  • Walk every path in their allocated Parish once each year.
  • For each path note any faults found or none if appropriate.
  • Report their findings to the PPA Coordinator who clarifies what has been found with the Adopter.
  • The PPA Coordinator will then work with the EHFO to log as appropriate any faults agreed and let the adopter know.
In Maldon and Dengie we have 33 parishes with 613 paths covering 321 miles.  Our largest parish has 45 paths covering 20.5 miles and our smallest has 4 paths over 1.3 miles.  So, there should be a parish to suit everyone.
There are numerous aids that we can use, and coaching will be provided as required but the main aids are:
  1. The Definitive Map - PRoW Interactive Map | Essex County Council (essexhighways.org)
  2. Already Identified Faults - Track it - Essex County Council (essexhighways.org)
  3. Vegetation Cutting - Vegetation cutting | Essex County Council (essexhighways.org)
  4. What 3 Words app - https://what3words.com/ for location and photos, although other tools are used
If you are interested in becoming a Parish Path Adopter, then please contact the PPA Coordinator at [email protected]. or a member of the Committee.
