To All - please find below note from our Footpath Officer about FP33 Hoe Mill Lock. I would try and avoid if possible.
As I mentioned on Friday, Essex Waterways will be undertaking works to improve water flow into and through the bypass channel for Hoe Mill Lock in the next few weeks.
This is essential work to protect the locks and reduce the risk of flooding etc.
This will almost certainly affect the highlighted section of FP33 Woodham Walter below.
I have discussed the work with Essex Waterways staff and have asked them to try to make sure that there is minimum disruption and inconvenience to footpath users.
However, it is inevitable that there will be some minor inconvenience at times. There will be a long-reach excavator working on or very close to the PROW so walkers will need to take care when approaching.
There will be some tree felling, dredging and earth movements etc so the area will look a bit of a mess for a while but it will recover very quickly and it should solve the problems we have been having with this footpath flooding and the footbridges being washed away.
If anyone has any concerns about the works themselves they should contact Essex Waterways – their contact details are on their website.
Any concerns about the footpath can be reported to me via the online reporting tool or directly by phone – 07545 756009.

BOOK YOUR PLACES NOW! SALTMARSH COAST WALKING FESTIVAL 2024
The Maldon District Tourism Group, working with a wide range of partners which includes Maldon & Dengie Ramblers, is putting its plans in place for this year’s Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival, which will run from Friday 27th September to Sunday 6th October 2024.
Selected as one of the “Observer” newspaper’s ten best British walking festivals for 2024, this year’s theme is “Wood and Water”. There will be over 25 guided walks around the Maldon District’s spectacular coastline, woodland and inland villages, designed to appeal to all ages and levels of ability. However, if you’d prefer to explore the area at your own pace, there’ll be plenty of self-guided walks available to download from the website.
From a hike around the renowned Tollesbury Old Hall Marshes nature reserve with an expert guide from the RSPB, to a walk along the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation with the return leg on a canal trip boat, there will be plenty of unique experiences for you to enjoy during the ten days of the Festival. There will be several walks in the programme which have been designed and led by the Maldon & Dengie Ramblers.
And the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. We are lining up a programme of evening entertainment, which will include fascinating talks from local experts on a wide range of topics and other events.
You can find out more information on the Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival (and find details of self-guided walks in the District you can try now) by visiting Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival 2024
You can also sign up on the website to receive regular updates through an emailed newsletter, and offer to help at the Festival by volunteering as a walk leader or backmarker.
