Notes for Leaders
Please note these notes are written as a guide - they are not rules
Planning
Choose the area, the length & decide whether circular, figure-of-eight or linear
From an OS map or guidebook determine the route, where to park, where to stop & if lunch is to be included determine where
Prepare a route map
Before the walk
Walk the full route noting critical points, assess any risks and complete the Risk assessment form downloadable below.
Check timing of refreshment &/or lunch stop
Call the pub / café so as to ensure they are expecting the group & whether they require the group to pre-order
On the day
Arrive in good time, bring a mobile phone, Hi-Vis jacket & route map
Introduce yourself, welcome everyone, introduce any newcomers and announce your appointed backmarker
Warn the walkers of any potential hazards
Outline the route of walk and approximate timetable
Count the number in the group
If delayed, try & contact a another member of the group who is likely to be walking - if you are unable to get to the start within 15 minutes of the lead time then walkers may well make other arrangements
Throughout the walk
Stay at the front of the group
Frequently check to see the group is not getting too spread out
Where appropriate wear a Hi-Vis jacket
Make informed decisions about how to lead the group along tarmac roads, the Highway code has good advice for walkers
Manage the flow of walkers over stiles, bridges and through gates
Make sure you can account for all who started the walk!
If an emergency situation develops take control of the situation involve and organise others to assist
After the walk
.Advise Alison Taylor of the number of people taking part in the walk
In the unlikely event of an accident please complete a
Ramblers Incident Report Form & report the details to the Rambles Secretary
